Rebuilding a Trusted Framework of Values for Asian Media

Press Asia Safeguards Media Credibility Through Professional Training, Ethical Standards and Cross-Border Collaboration

(Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur – Joint Release) In an era where digital information proliferates at exponential speed, the role of media faces unprecedented scrutiny and challenges. Since its establishment in 2018, Press Asia Asian Media and Communication Organisation has brought together senior media practitioners, communication scholars and public policy experts from twelve countries and regions across Asia, dedicating itself to establishing an operational framework for the Asian media and communication industry that accommodates both cultural diversity and international standards. The organisation today releases its complete organisational overview, setting out its specific areas of work in media professional training, ethical standards development, industry conduct maintenance, and social impact construction.

The founding of Press Asia responds to a fundamental question in the current information environment: as social platforms rise, algorithms dominate information distribution, and commercial pressures permeate newsrooms, how can media maintain their public character while continuing to earn social trust. The organisation maintains that media credibility cannot emerge from a vacuum, but must be accumulated gradually through sustained professional training, rigorous content vetting, and adherence to ethical boundaries. To this end, Press Asia assists member organisations in formulating internal editorial policies, promotes the standardisation of fact-checking mechanisms, and ensures through annual reviews and evaluation systems that member organisations consistently meet the media operational standards it has established.

In the area of industry ethics, Press Asia adopts self-regulatory principles that exceed minimum legal requirements. The "Media Integrity and Professional Ethics Guidelines" promulgated by the organisation cover more than twenty specific provisions, including news source verification, conflict of interest disclosure, protection of victim privacy, and the obligation to label artificial intelligence-generated content. These guidelines are continuously revised as technology evolves and society changes, ensuring they remain current. Press Asia requires that all member organisations and their practitioners take the public interest as their highest priority when facing political pressure, commercial interests, or ideological conflicts. The organisation has established an independent ethics committee responsible for handling major complaints against member organisations and regularly publishes summaries of decisions, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and accountability.

Deepening professional domains constitutes another core area of Press Asia's work. The organisation has observed that the media industry has expanded from traditional news production into a multi-faceted industry encompassing data journalism, visual storytelling, social media management, corporate communication strategies, crisis public relations, and content subscription models. Accordingly, Press Asia has established six specialised committees: the News and Editorial Committee, the Digital and Data Committee, the Corporate Communication and Public Relations Committee, the Media Regulation and Policy Committee, the Artificial Intelligence and Media Ethics Committee, and the Media Literacy Education Committee. Each committee is led by experts with more than twenty years of practical experience in their respective fields, regularly organising workshops, case studies and cross-border exchange programmes to help practitioners stay ahead of industry transformation.

Education is regarded by Press Asia as the fundamental pathway to achieving the organisation's vision. The organisation firmly believes that the future of media depends on those who master technology, rather than technology itself. Press Asia has established partnerships with journalism and communication schools at universities across Asia, developing curriculum modules that integrate practice with ethics, and has established the "Asia Media Education Fellowship" to support young journalists and communication professionals in pursuing in-depth investigative reporting and public interest writing. For working media professionals, the organisation offers the "Media Leadership Academy," cultivating the next generation of senior media executives with strategic thinking, ethical judgment and management capabilities. The goal of education lies in transmitting values, enabling every media practitioner to make judgments that stand the test of time in complex situations.

Credibility, for Press Asia, constitutes a set of concrete actions that can be practiced, evaluated and continuously strengthened. The organisation assists member organisations in establishing credibility indicator systems covering aspects such as content accuracy rates, transparency of correction mechanisms, healthiness of audience engagement, and diversity within newsrooms. Press Asia publishes the annual "Asia Media Credibility Report," using empirical data to analyse trends in media trust levels across the region and proposing concrete recommendations for improvement. The organisation maintains that media credibility derives from caution in every report, honesty in every mistake, and refusal in every conflict of interest. This path determines the essence of media as a public instrument.

In terms of value proposition, Press Asia upholds four core values: "Professionalism, Independence, Diversity, Common Good." Professionalism is reflected in methodological rigour, independence is reflected in editorial autonomy free from undue interference by power and capital, diversity is reflected in inclusive representation of different ethnic groups, classes and perspectives, and common good is reflected in media aiming to promote overall social welfare. These four values run through all of Press Asia's training programmes, evaluation standards and public advocacy initiatives, distinguishing it from ordinary commercial media organisations.

The function of communication in contemporary society has surpassed the mere release of news. Press Asia maintains that whether for traditional media, digital-native media, or internal corporate communication departments, the core task lies in establishing "effective understanding"—helping the public distinguish what is true, what is important, and what is relevant to them in an environment of information overload. The organisation regards communication as a professional craft, emphasising clarity of message design, appropriateness of channel selection, and strategic thinking for building long-term relationships of trust with audiences. Press Asia provides members with communication strategy consulting, crisis communication exercises, and practical guidance for cross-cultural communication, assisting them in conducting effective and responsible communication across Asia's highly culturally diverse landscape.

Regarding media's impact on society, Press Asia consistently maintains that a healthy media ecosystem is a necessary condition for democratic societies to function soundly. Over the past several years, media in various Asian countries and regions have played crucial roles during social transformations—exposing public interest abuses, facilitating rational policy discussions, and providing platforms for marginalised groups to voice their concerns. At the same time, disinformation has repeatedly torn apart social consensus, intensified polarisation, affected election outcomes and hindered public health policy implementation. Press Asia chooses to intervene in a constructive manner: the organisation does not directly engage in news reporting, but through elevating the professional standards of the entire industry, indirectly improves the quality of information received by hundreds of millions of audience members. The journalists it trains, the standards it establishes, and the educational programmes it promotes ultimately translate into higher quality content, more responsible communication behaviour, and more resilient spaces for social dialogue.

Press Asia, as an open, collaborative and continuously growing professional community, welcomes all individuals and organisations who share the value of media credibility to join. Its members include senior media professionals with decades of experience, young practitioners just beginning their journey in communication, professionals working for large news organisations, independent media workers, corporate communication department heads, and academic research institutions. The organisation promotes experience exchange and mutual support among media practitioners from different countries through the annual Asia Media Summit, cross-border investigative reporting collaboration projects, and regional media policy advocacy initiatives.

Press Asia maintains secretariats in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, serving East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asia. The organisation will continue to promote the establishment of media professional standards and advocate at the regional level for policy environments conducive to press freedom and media diversity.
